Candace makes drawings which insist that you take your time with them. Quiet events that take place in the corners of our lives and living spaces that go unnoticed, or if they are, could be mistaken as unremarkable when witnessed while swept up in the current of a busy day. It’s in these moments that Candace finds endless fascination, and the center of her creative focus for this exhibition. 

Light, transparency, shape, shadow, and opacity are all of great importance. Though it’s the emotional potency that these elements give life to when they all converge that resonate in these drawings. They may float in on the breeze though an open window, collect on a sill, spill onto the floor, or climb the face of a door. The desire to sit and observe, feel the light on your skin, listen to the whisper of the curtains, and speak back in a hushed voice can be as arresting as it is beautiful. The passing time when one really wishes to stop. Paused by a need to take a moment to yourself and appreciate the brilliant regularity, and drowsy sweetness of an uncomplicated existence.


The drawings in this collection demonstrate a mind that is still able to be mesmerized. Plant forms that bend and distort behind curtains that catch the breeze, acting as ships’ sails- or movie screens, capturing overlapping shadowplays that create moving abstractions. Tonal shifts of such nuanced delicacy that they feel softer than the fabrics they depict. Rich passageways and bridges of heavy darkness that span pools of intense light manage to simultaneously give the sense of deep space, and two dimensional surface. Candace displays mastery with the pencil and pushes the medium into the deep end of its capability.
