SUMMARY:6x10B Drawing Invitational
DESCRIPTION:Join us for May First Friday as we continue the celebration of the 6x10B Drawing Invitational exhibition! \nParticipating Artists:\nMatt Allyn Chapman\nDorothy Frey\nJeff Geib\nEvan Kitson\nJason Ward\nZane York \nIn October of 2023 we held an exhibition of drawings all focused around the use of the 6H pencil. Inspired by William de Kooning and his teachings at Black Mountain College in the 1950’s. We invited 10 artists to participate by creating original artworks all using the same materials. With this new exhibition we see the challenge re envisioned\, and with it a new set of parameters for both the Artist and their Artwork. Here it is as presented yet again by curators Jeff Geib\, Evan Kitson\, Matt Chapman & Nicole Duquette: \nMoved by the success and sheer enjoyment discovered in the 6H challenge\, we have invited 6 artists to participate and have outfitted them with the same materials\, the Faber Pitt Matte 10B\, and the Mitsubishi Hi Uni 10B\, the same surface to work on\, and the same amount of time to develop an original work of art. In a sense still pulling from the thread of de Kooning\, as he was inspired to teach using the lessons that had a great impact on him as a student. We have asked these 6 artists\, all educators\, to look into their own teaching practice and pull a lesson that they ask their students to complete. \nImage shown is by local artist Jason Ward.

SUMMARY:“Nature Magnified” by Resident Artist Melissa Zane Friday May 2 nd - Saturday\, May 31st
DESCRIPTION:Nature Magnified is a collection of large-scale acrylic paintings that focus on the individual\naspects of the natural world. This series enhances the design elements that make up their larger\nwholes by exploring color\, texture\, and light. Each piece takes on a life of its own from inception\nto unanticipated outcomes\, depicting my unique interpretation of natural beauty.\nBeyond showcasing the obvious\, the sheer size of the subject matter encourages viewers to\nlook deeper. Color guides the eye\, inviting harmony and repetition or urging an examination of\ndesign beyond mere color. Texture contributes a sense of depth and complexity through high-\nrelief ornamentation\, intricate patterns\, and my organic style. The incorporation of metallic and\niridescent paints means that light transforms the viewer’s perception based on different angles\nand varying times of day\, whether under natural or artificial light.\nOverall\, the series invites viewers on a fascinating journey of exploration that goes beyond the\nsurface\, encouraging a greater appreciation for nature and the small natural elements\nsurrounding us.\nFor more info:\nhttps://www.lancasterartvault.com/upcoming-current-shows/515licj75lr86qfhfmrdbwfv4nxmod

SUMMARY:Pysanky Artist Talk & Demonstration with Jennifer Domal Saturday\, April 12 11:00AM-12:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:Join Guest Artist Jennifer Domal as she speaks about the ancient art of Pysanky. Pysanky are\ndecorated eggs created using the beeswax resist (batik) technique. The word comes from the verb\n“pysaty” which means “to write”.\nThese talismans have a long\, rich history among the peoples of Eastern and Central Europe\,\nparticularly Ukrainians and Poles. The intricate designs on real eggshells were originally written\nas requests to gods and goddesses for health\, love\, wealth\, and fertility. \nToday\, artists continue this tradition\, using the same techniques and motifs to create new works\non blown eggshells. Their designs honor the past while engaging in dialogue with contemporary\nartistic practice.\nAbout the Artist:\nThrough the art of batik on natural eggshells\, Jennifer Domal explores the intricate dialogue\nbetween cultural heritage and historical decorative arts. Her work reinterprets traditional motifs\nby writing them with designs drawn from textile patterns\, architectural elements\, illuminated\nmanuscripts\, and period furniture\, creating visual narratives that span centuries of craft tradition.\nThe disciplined process of applying melted beeswax and dye to eggshells creates layered depths\nof color and pattern. Each artwork emerges through successive applications of wax and dye\,\nbuilding complex structures that tell stories of artistic evolution and interchange. The curved\nsurface of the egg transforms conventional decorative patterns into dynamic three-dimensional\ncompositions.

SUMMARY:6x10B Drawing Invitational
DESCRIPTION:In October of 2023 we held an exhibition of drawings all focused around the use of the 6H pencil. Here it is as presented yet again by curators Jeff Geib\, Evan Kitson\, Matt Chapman & Nicole Duquette: \nMoved by the success and sheer enjoyment discovered in the 6H challenge\, we have invited 6 artists to participate and have outfitted them with the same materials\, the Faber Pitt Matte 10B\, and the Mitsubishi Hi Uni 10B *\, the same surface to work on **\, and the same amount of time to develop an original work of art ***. In a sense still pulling from the thread of de Kooning\, as he was inspired to teach using the lessons that had a great impact on him as a student. We have asked these 6 artists \,all educators\, to look into their own teaching practice and pull a lesson that they ask their students to complete. \nParticipating Artists:\nMatt Allyn Chapman\nDorothy Frey\nJeff Geib\nEvan Kitson\nJason Ward\nZane York \nJoin us in the opening reception of the 6x10B exhibition on First Friday April 4th 5:00-8:00pm.

SUMMARY:Color and Place with Guest Artists Laura Watt\, Mimi Shapiro\, Ellen Silberlicht\, Jennifer Domal\, Karen Schory and emerging artist\, Joseph Roach Opens First Friday\, April 4 through May 31st
DESCRIPTION:Color & Place is an exploration of how color shapes our understanding and experience of\nplace—whether real\, imagined\, or abstract. Featuring the work of Laura Watt\, Mimi Shapiro\,\nEllen Silberlicht\, Jennifer Domal\, Karen Schory and emerging artist\, Joseph Roach\, this\nexhibition brings together artists who use color as a primary force to define landscapes\, evoke\nenvironments\, and reimagine spatial relationships. From vast natural expanses and urban scenes\nto surreal environments and abstract forms\, the works in this show challenge the boundaries of\nhow we perceive and connect to place.\nThrough vibrant hues\, tonal subtleties\, and expressive compositions\, Color & Place invites\nviewers to consider how color can be both a reflection of the physical world and a gateway to\nnew\, intangible spaces. Whether through bold abstraction or detailed representation\, each work\ncaptures the essence of place—not just as a geographic location but as an emotional\, and deeply\npersonal experience.\nFeaturing a range of media including painting\, photography\, mixed media\, and fiber art\, Color &\nPlace celebrates the power of color to define\, distort\, and transform our perception of the world. \nAlso featuring the work for the following selected artists:\nAnn Benton Yeager\, Diann Cardello\, Felicia Feemster\, Jane Wolf\, Jessica C. Oehme\, Jordan\nSwartz\, Kim Bricker\, Kristin Whitbeck Lee\, Lee Shannon\, Leia Davliakos\, Lindsey Cammauf\,\nLouise Thomas\, Marilyn Fox\, Marlena Beiler\, Morgan Scott\, Nichole Madonna\, Olivia Stoltzfus\,\nPaul Engleheart\, Sherrie Snyder\, Steffany Minotti\, Stone Stafford\, Susan LePage\, Terri\nYacovelli\, Tina Borchert\, Tracy Lambros\, Valerie R. SUMMARY:Resident Artist Sara Stichler presents “Catching Ephemeral: Through the Prisms of Paint and Poetry” at Lancaster Art Vault. Opens First Friday\, April 4 through April 26th
DESCRIPTION:Capturing Ephemeral highlights an attempt to stop time; to freeze and exalt fleeting moments of\nbeauty. Paired with some of my favorite verses of poetry\, I hope to share with the viewer the\nsense of wonder tinged with nostalgia that comes from knowing these moments have passed.\nWhat was once the reality of the present moment now exists only in the confines of memory and\nthe colors on the canvas.\n“Nature is often my inspiration\, and I work in watercolor and oils to evoke mood and sense of\nplace. My artwork features places and subjects that are significant to me\, ranging from my\ngarden\, to my hometown\, to far-off places around the globe. Each painting represents a moment\nand a place that I seek to capture and recreate. I’m interested in sharing the moments I find\nbeautiful\, and endeavor to invite the viewer in\, to reflect on the elusiveness of time\, and to feel a\nsense of serenity.”\nMore Info at www.LancasterArtVault.com\nLancaster Art Vault is located at 100 North Queen Street\, Lancaster.\nEmail Info@LancasterArtVault.com for more information.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Isiah Bates
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk on Tuesday March 11th 7:00-8:00pm with gallery artist Isiah Bates and his show Visions of Modular Dreamscapes\, currently on view through March 29th.\nCurator Matt Allyn Chapman will lead the conversation\, questions and thoughts are welcome throughout!\nLight refreshments will be served. \nSelection from the Exhibition Copy: \nOur dreams have purpose\, though mysterious and hard to fully grasp\, we are coming to understand them more and more. Memory retention\, emotional repair\, cognitive stimulation during periods of rest\, these are just a few of the benefits of our dreams. Physically and mentally\, they are deeply important\, though creatively\, they can be instrumental. Isiah draws from the creative well that his dreams have sprung to mesmerizing effect. Each time pulling something to the surface that feels impossible. Landscapes never visited\, people and beings both familiar and strange\, entities and energies that only make sense in the logic and possibility of the dreaming world. It’s really when his hands and mind connect that they are made material. \n“This body of work represents a true exploration of self\, in its purest form. An unfiltered reality waiting to be pieced together. By letting my hand move across the surface without any true direction\, I can actively pull from this other reality. This process lessens the stress of perfection and creates a direct link between the waking world and that of the mind. This allows me to create a dreamscape of raw emotion and lived experience. Then I sit back and analyze with the viewer. I may not know what they all mean quite yet\, but a new piece of the story is revealed with each painting. This is what drives me to make more. An ongoing process of self discovery through art. I am both the artist and the audience.”

SUMMARY:Visions of Modular Dreamscapes: New Work by Isiah Bates
DESCRIPTION:Join curio. for the opening reception of Visions of Modular Dreamscapes featuring new work by Isiah Bates on First Friday February 7th 5:00-8:00pm \nA selection for the exhibition copy: \nWho are you? \nA question we encounter often. Whether getting to know a new person\, educators planting the seed in consideration of the future\, or the voices of our mind that roll around knocking into other thoughts that vie for our attention. Many of us generally have a prepared answer for this\, though is only a few short words or phrases really enough? \nArtist Isiah Bates has a deep relationship with this very question\, and offers countless responses through his drawings & paintings. Nebulous in their space\, vast in scale\, and deep in narrative. His pieces offer a multiverse of scenarios that all share a singular point of origin\, himself. Realized in the trails of a well trodden daydream\, or pulled from the sliver of space between his sleeping and waking mind. His pieces brim with surrealist interest\, abstract sensibilities\, and with symbols and iconography from various histories both universal and personal. \n“I see dreams as a glimpse into the reality of the mind. Not to say that every dream has some deep meaning behind it\, but some might. These ‘visions’ have led me to explore the inner workings of my mind and open a dialogue between my conscious and subconscious self.”

SUMMARY:A Subtle Shift in our Perception Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join curio. Gallery & Creative Supply for an evening in the gallery celebrating the A Subtle Shift in our Perception exhibition with an Artist Talk with Mike Witmer and Matt Allyn Chapman. Be a part of our conversation as Witmer and Chapman discuss their conceptual explorations\, materials usage\, process\, and building a series with extreme limitations. Questions welcome\, light snacks will be served! \n“Seeing\, vision\, observation and perception may seem like four terms that describe the same thing. Though for artists Mike Witmer and Matt Allyn Chapman\, they ask that you provide each the time and consideration they need to be individual actions before merging them together as we so often do. \nThe artworks in this exhibition offer new elements of experience the longer you stay with them. The slightest change in color may be in truth the meeting of two different tones\, or multiple values coming together at an intersection. They may also be the introduction of shadow\, a rounded corner\, or an indentation in the surface\, leading you to believe they are different when they are in fact the same. It all comes down to perception. When we look\, are we using our vision\, or are we “seeing”? When we observe something\, are we making assumptions from past experience\, or are we allowing space for new meetings and understanding?”

SUMMARY:A Subtle Shift in our Perception: Mike Witmer & Matt Allyn Chapman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for January First Friday as we continue the celebration of our exhibition A Subtle Shift in our Perception featuring the works of local artists Mike Witmer and Matt Allyn Chapman. Open with extended hours 5:00-8:00pm. \n“At its core this is a collection of works celebrating color\, and how the use of a limited palette can yield boundless results. A change in stroke direction\, one coat vs. two\, dilution and saturation\, even different manufacturers can turn a single color into multiple. Changes in the physical landscape of the surface and those that are purely optical play with how we make sense of what our eyes are seeing and what our minds are perceiving. There is illusion in the truth of these pieces\, they can be playfully serious and champion the minimal in ways that satisfy the academic and excite the expressionist. \nFinding appreciation in the slow down and reverence in the unique conversations we have with abstraction\, it is our desire to share that which we discover for ourselves that brought us together in this place. Witmer and Chapman have found an incredibly strong connection in their mutual fascination with nuance\, and their respect for the subtle shifts in our perception.”

SUMMARY:A Subtle Shift in our Perception: Mike Witmer & Matt Allyn Chapman\, Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join curio. Gallery & Creative Supply for the opening reception of A Subtle Shift in our Perception featuring work by local artists Mike Witmer and Matt Allyn Chapman on First Friday December 6th\, 5:00-8:00pm! \nAbout the show: \nThe artworks in this exhibition offer new elements of experience the longer you stay with them. When we observe something\, are we making assumptions from past experience\, or are we allowing space for new meetings and understanding? \nAt its core this is a collection of works celebrating color\, and how the use of a limited palette can yield boundless results.
