SUMMARY:10x6H Drawing Invitational
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the second month of 10x6H Drawing Invitational!  \nA challenge\, by nature is something that is confrontational\, it brings with it a sense of pressure. The stakes don’t have to be high\, and confrontation isn’t always a negative interaction\, it can be playful. Though ultimately there is an expectation of three possible outcomes- success\, stalemate or failure. The artists in this exhibition\, we are happy to say all succeed\, the resulting drawings are no doubt a testament to the determination and creativity found in each of them. \nHere is the challenge\, as presented by co-curators Jeff Geib & Evan Kitson: “Inspired by William de Kooning’s teaching at Black Mountain College in 1950\, we propose a unique material-based exhibition where each participating artist is given the same 6H pencils *\, the same surface to work on **\, and the same amount of time to develop an original work of art ***. de Kooning was inspired to teach using the lessons that had a great impact on him as a student. We’d like the participating artists to think back on their time as a student and pull from a lesson that had a major impact on them at the time\, or one that they now see as having great merit. If such a lesson is unavailable\, we suggest they look to art history for insight\, and consider that our time as a student may be never-ending.”  \nThe importance of this exhibition isn’t only found in the marks on the paper’s surface\, it’s revealed in the realization that 10 artists found their way through the dark of this undertaking. Using their memory as a torch to light the way and their pencils as walking sticks\, testing the terrain in front of them. Their trail is laid on the paper\, for us to see. \nAccompanying each drawing is a statement by the artist\, some are transparent\, philosophical\, even a touch religious\, and others more of a reflectory account of their process. These collected insights help us enter each piece with a knowledge that isn’t necessarily essential to their appreciation\, but offer a deep look into their creation\, and bring with them an understanding .  \n______________ \n* The 6h pencil is a notoriously difficult drawing instrument to work with.\n** Each artist was given a single sheet of Fabriano 300lb paper\, stamped for authenticity\n*** Artists were given their materials in November of 2022

Our native landscapes and stream corridors are works of art and a goal of the Buffer Action Team is to help educate the community to understand the plantings happening in their very own backyards and the science behind them. DESCRIPTION:Join curio. from 7:00-9:00pm on Tuesday September 12th as we settle in for an evening of drawing and discussion. Matt will be behind the easel\, this time working with charcoal!  \nA really expressive\, and often forgiving medium\, charcoal allows you to make really developed drawings in short order thanks to its ability to be pushed around\, wiped away\, and erased out. Matt will be working from observation as he uses charcoal in both vine and compressed form\, multiple eraser styles\, and most definitely a chamois cloth. \nOpen discussion\, questions\, and other conversation is welcome and most definitely encouraged. \nSpace is limited to 10 people\, pre-registration is required. \nPlease note curio. is located down a flight of stairs.

SUMMARY:Pocket Art Swap #8: On My Mind Opening
DESCRIPTION:The idea for Pocket Art Swap formed in 2019 as a way to connect artists together and celebrate the individuality each of us hold in a unique and meaningful way. Inspired by a pad of Stonehenge Legion paper measuring only 2.5″ x 3.75″\, we envisioned an exhibition showcasing collections of artist trading cards that would be swapped among the participating artists after the pop-up show\, creating an instant collection of personal artist trading cards. The event has evolved into creating under a loose theme (previous themes have been Night & Day\, curiosity\, The DEEP and All Things Small) where artists can explore and interpret in any media\, style and concept. The works are then displayed in the gallery for one month before the swap packs curated by us and are distributed back to each participating artist. \nDue to the nature of the swap\, works are not for sale. \nThoughts are always present in the mind. Even when we try to quiet them\, they still find a way to get our attention. What will be on the mind of the 16 local artists who are participating in Pocket Art Swap #8? Join us for the opening on September 1st to find out! The exhibition will be on view through September 30th.
