A depth that makes you consider the boundaries. Where you draw the line between the collage and the poem. Are they one-in-the-same\, or is there a distinction? Does a line need to exist in the first place? \nIn a few thoughtfully placed words she creates a narrative\, touches on an emotion or a memory\, and evokes a sense of atmosphere. They can keep you at arms length or pull you in close. Each one is razor sharp in the pairing of their text and imagery. Some have humor\, others have a ring of wisdom that read like maxims for the here\, now\, and gone. \nThe concept of  “saying more with less” is exemplified masterfully. Often in fewer than 5 actions\, Dorney composes powerful artworks that touch on principles of design\, psychology\, and language. Limited palettes\, bold shapes\, complex textures\, and intuitive placement make each piece a world unto itself\, productive and strong. Their text read as signs of civilization\, where one can travel to look for connection and understanding from another.

DESCRIPTION:Join Guest Artist Jennifer Domal as she speaks about the ancient art of Pysanky. Pysanky are\ndecorated eggs created using the beeswax resist (batik) technique. The word comes from the verb\n“pysaty” which means “to write”.\nThese talismans have a long\, rich history among the peoples of Eastern and Central Europe\,\nparticularly Ukrainians and Poles. The intricate designs on real eggshells were originally written\nas requests to gods and goddesses for health\, love\, wealth\, and fertility. \nToday\, artists continue this tradition\, using the same techniques and motifs to create new works\non blown eggshells. Their designs honor the past while engaging in dialogue with contemporary\nartistic practice.\nAbout the Artist:\nThrough the art of batik on natural eggshells\, Jennifer Domal explores the intricate dialogue\nbetween cultural heritage and historical decorative arts. Her work reinterprets traditional motifs\nby writing them with designs drawn from textile patterns\, architectural elements\, illuminated\nmanuscripts\, and period furniture\, creating visual narratives that span centuries of craft tradition.\nThe disciplined process of applying melted beeswax and dye to eggshells creates layered depths\nof color and pattern. Each artwork emerges through successive applications of wax and dye\,\nbuilding complex structures that tell stories of artistic evolution and interchange. The curved\nsurface of the egg transforms conventional decorative patterns into dynamic three-dimensional\ncompositions.

Memory retention\, emotional repair\, cognitive stimulation during periods of rest\, these are just a few of the benefits of our dreams. Physically and mentally\, they are deeply important\, though creatively\, they can be instrumental. Isiah draws from the creative well that his dreams have sprung to mesmerizing effect. Each time pulling something to the surface that feels impossible. Landscapes never visited\, people and beings both familiar and strange\, entities and energies that only make sense in the logic and possibility of the dreaming world. It’s really when his hands and mind connect that they are made material. \n“This body of work represents a true exploration of self\, in its purest form. An unfiltered reality waiting to be pieced together. By letting my hand move across the surface without any true direction\, I can actively pull from this other reality. This process lessens the stress of perfection and creates a direct link between the waking world and that of the mind. This allows me to create a dreamscape of raw emotion and lived experience. Then I sit back and analyze with the viewer. I may not know what they all mean quite yet\, but a new piece of the story is revealed with each painting. This is what drives me to make more. An ongoing process of self discovery through art. I am both the artist and the audience.”

And I felt enamored and I responded to the call: yes. \nThis discovery led to the Water Nymph\, Weirdo Goddess and Little Love Stories series\, all tied together in a surrealist imagining of my curiosity about our relationship with nature (and each other) and how we communicate\, the sensual connections. Free to attend\, join us for a conversation discussing the range of work in the exhibition\, navigate the different sources of inspiration and talk about materials.\nBring your questions\, conversation and enjoy light refreshments!\n——–\nAbout the show:\nBringing together multiple bodies of work\, spanning very recent and the inevitably lengthening past\, artist Joanna Davis shows us how she carries a thread of connection in one hand and a brush in the other. \nNatural wonders of the mind rise from landscapes in watercolor while collages act as hand drawn maps and ciphers to emotional destinations. Each piece is a part of a collective sojourn that individually we are familiar with\, if we take the time to recognize it in ourselves. \nCreating anything with our hands takes time\, a variable degree of intention\, and focus. When we allow ourselves the time to slow the passing of our days and call back the events that make them\, we relive them\, for better or worse. When Joanna mines these events she finds pockets of creative crystals. Much like the mineral\, they are resilient even if sometimes fragmented\, formed in irregular shapes- dictated by the pressure of their surroundings\, and endlessly intriguing. \nJoanna’s Neural Pathway series resonates like a singing bowl. The pieces speak to the thoughts we keep to ourselves as their sine wave circulates in our head. Thoughts of how we understand the world\, and how in turn we are understood. Emotions that challenge us when we are at our most fragile\, and our most resolute. Almost “automatic”\, they feel unconcerned with their legibility. Instead they revel in their spontaneity\nWalls and Formations is a series that exists in the abstract. Floating islands and land masses hang in the negative space\, bound only by their surface’s physical boundaries. These landscapes have all the serenity of walking alone in a sunbathed field and amongst the shade of trees\, the raw fury and indiscriminate consumption of wildfire\, along with the blackened aftermath. \nShifting the lens in which we look through into one that finds metaphor\, one could arrive at many. Abundance and drought\, the search for ourselves within ourselves\, how we connect to the environments around us\, and the people who occupy them with us.
